Daybreak

Share Article

We break bones  – both the break and the mending a painful process. We break dishes, mirrors, windows.  The shattering makes us gasp; the shards are a minefield of injury.  Someone breaks into our car or our home, and we feel violated. A TV banner alerts us to “breaking news,” and most often we watch with shock and horror.

But, morning…

Morning isn’t sudden or painful. It doesn’t break or break into anything. Morning arrives with predictable gentleness, and on many days, with such glorious beauty, that I can’t help but wonder why in the world we call the transition from night to day daybreak or the break of dawn?

If we look to the east, we can see how slowly raspberry and maize infuse the cobalt of dawn. We can watch the softening of those rich colors to sherbet as the sun rises closer to the horizon. The change is gradual, almost imperceptible. Sometimes we need to close our eyes for a long moment in order to see how much the sky has changed when we open them again. Finally, a bright arch guides our eyes to the exact place the sun will push into view.

But, we don’t have to watch the sun rise to see the sunrise.

If we can bear to turn away and look to the west, we will see the darkness still fading gently, but inversely –  from sky above us to the horizon. Stars blink out overhead. Silhouettes of trees take shape from tip to trunk.

Then, wait for it…

The rose pink Belt of Venus forms just above the darkest bluing before it floats down to disappear in earth’s shadow. As the sun crests the horizon behind us, we can watch it brush fields and trees alike in melon watercolor before it burns strong enough to sharpen earth’s colors and shadows alike.

O Lord, thank You so much for the way You lovingly unwrap the days that You have made for us. Let us always be glad and rejoice in them. Amen.

  1. I can close my eyes and imagine what you are describing so beautifully! The photos also reinforce your eloquently writing!

  2. Sunrise and sunset are some of my favorite times. I think God brings such beauty to remind us that he has not forgotten us or his promises. He is faithful as he brings the sun to “break” upon each day.

I do also love the beauty of a clear dawn and the changes as the sun slowly creeps above the horizon. A special treat this time of year!!

    1. Thank you, Cindy! You always give me a new perspective. I never thought of morning and rainbows the same way, but they both really are reminders of His steadfast love and faithfulness, aren’t they?!

I agree: I love the beauty of a clear dawn. It is so different from the also beautiful dawn with dramatic clouds.

      Take care.

      Deb

  3. I am so grateful that you do not live in a city where you could not see the dawn or the dusk of day. You describe God’s beauty for us so eloquently that we learn to treasure God’s gifts. Thank you for your gifts!

  4. Another lovely post with words and pictures which are both beautiful–thank you!

This is the first post that I have seen from you in quite a long time and I found this one in span. I marked it as ‘allow’ so I hope that solves the problem.

  5. Oh my goodness, Paulette! Thank you. I’m glad I live where I can watch the sun rise and set, too. So much beauty, such a gift from the Creator. Seems to me that the benefits of the sun are gift enough. Then God adds a big bow of such glorious color!

  6. Thank you, Myra!
I posted a couple of weeks ago for the first time in a while. This is the second since then. Hmm…

I still might not have all the bugs out of the program. Thanks for letting me know! Ugh…

I still have so much to learn about the art and craft of photographing bubbles as they freeze, but God’s work in beautifying those bubbles?
