Walking into a New Year

Share Article

I should have turned east to drop bulletins at church, but I was drawn by the soft colors of the sunset and turned west at the last minute instead.

I stopped when I saw this beautiful silhouette against a gorgeous sky.

I took a few pictures with my phone and then just watched the colors deepen and melt into twilight ink. What a perfect way to end the almost-last day of the year.

We spent most of December marking the wait for Emmanuel. The wait was over when we sang “Joy to the World” and celebrated Jesus’ birth only a few short days ago.

And today? The road into 2024 feels a little scary. I don’t know where it will lead. But, I do know that the God who sent His Son for us will be walking with us- every step of the way.

He promised.

Thank You, Lord. Amen.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27 (ESV)

“And behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 (ESV)

  1. Thank you, Deb, once again, for a beautiful ending to my day. You are so amazing at bringing God’s glory to each of us.
Wishing you the happiest new year ever.

    1. Thank you so much, Kim. God’s glory is what is amazing! In scenes as big as a sunset and as small as frost crystals on a seed pod, all of nature is singing. Happy New Year to you and your family, too!

      Take care.

  2. “Twilight ink” ~ what a perfect reflection. I’ve never thought of a sunset compared to ink, but I see it. Thanks for your beautiful, comforting words.

    1. Thank you, Patti! I love the richness and depth of the blue just before darkness.

Years ago, Aunt Pearl and Mom took art classes and spent a lot of time painting local landscapes. Much to Mom’s disappointment, I never picked up a paint brush, but one day shortly after I picked up a camera, Aunt Pearl and I were talking about the colors of the eastern horizon at sunset. She looked at me and said, “You know… now that you are taking pictures, you will never look at the sky the same way again.” Ha! She was so right.

Thank you for sharing that you found post comforting. That was my prayer.

      Take care.

  3. Inspiration as usual. Always appreciate your photographs and your words. Blessings to you and your family in 2024.

  4. Wonderfully written! The Lord reveals so many things to us all, if only we take the time to notice, like you capture in your photos.

    1. Oh… thank you, Linda. “If only we take time to notice” is so true. I’ve always spent so much time looking ahead, planning and preparing, correcting and adjusting. The camera, especially with the close-up lens, reminds me to slow down, breathe deep, and look – really look – for the beauty all around me.

      Take care.

  5. Deb, as usual you found the beauty in that moment! Late winter sunsets behind trees are special. Now this photo is tied with your early winter morning panoramic photo for my favorite. A pin oak (?) in the foreground, morning planet or star, lighted window at the neighbors and it must be a church steeple on the horizon. I’m thinking either one would make a great print. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Jan! I DO love what sunrise and sunset colors can do to show off the beauty of a bare tree!

Yes, I can see our church steeple when I look to the southeast from our yard. It has had special billing in more than a few sunrise and rainbow pictures. And, when the skies in the east are still dark with storm clouds, but the sun pops out just before sunset… that steeple gleams.

I’ve had cards made with some of the sunrise photos, but nothing bigger to date. Text me if you are interested.

Hope you guys are doing well and that those grandbabies are bringing lots and lots of joy!

      Take care!

      Deb
